With Jannie du Toit, Susan Mouton (cello) and Chanie Jonker (piano and accordion)

In Bonjour Monsieur Brel, Jacques Brel's pictorial lyrics are sung in four languages by Jannie du Toit and accompanied by a musical ensemble of piano, cello and guitar.
Jannie has been a highly regarded Brel performer for decades and a persistent exponent of excellence in song art, among others in Dutch. He sang his first renditions of Brel in 1988 in the production "From Berlin to Bapsfontein" with Laurika Rauch. Since then, Brel has consistently played a role in presentations such as "De Kleine Man" and "Jannie en die Tannie" with Christa Steyn. His most recent performance in a Brel production was "Brel in Brooklyn" in 2010, again with Laurika, with Christa at the piano and Sergio Zampolli as accordionist.
Two Dutch Brel songs in particular - "Madeleine" and "Liefde van later" - established him as a Brel performer in the early 1990s, but his later French versions of "La Valse" and "Il Neige sur Liège" also received high praise from experts. Naòmi Morgan's Afrikaans translations, which compare extremely favourably with translations into other languages, represent a surprising new look at Brel's texts. Well-known hits are of course on the menu, but also of his more unknown, equally brilliant work.
Brel's ingenious visual writing emerges in the performance and is timeless like the works of classical composers and the world's operas, alas like all great art. Brel's song art will be reinterpreted and listened to over and over again for a long time to come. In this programme, his genius emerges equally strongly in all four languages - a testament to the unparalleled eloquence of the greatest chansonnier of the 20th century.
