Fidelio tells the story of a young woman, Leonora/Fidelio, who goes undercover as a young male prison warden where her husband, Florestan, is unjustly being kept prisoner. Fidelio`s plan is to find a way to - somehow - free her husband. The opera is based (admittedly loosely) on a true story known to Beethoven`s librettist. With its stirring choruses and soaring vocal ensemble music, Fidelio is a perfect opera for a performance in concert.

Johanni van Oostrum will sing her first Leonore, and is scheduled to reprise the role at Garsington Opera in June 2020. Musa Ngqungwana makes a welcome return as Rocco. Amy Jephta has written new narrations especially for this production, and Maestro Jeremy Silver will conduct the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra in this vast work.

Sponsored by the City of Cape Town and the Rupert Music Foundation.

`...prominent South African soprano Johanni van Oostrum, who sang Agathe in London recently, appears as the First Lady in the new Deutsche Grammophon Zauberflote and will sing Leonore at Garsington next summer. On the evidence so far, she`s a huge catch for Buckinghamshire: her lyric voice seems ideally placed for Elsa and Agatha, with peachy tone and long-breathed phrases, and careful attention to the text. She looked as if she knew the production intimately and, I can`t say I was at all disappointed. Garsington`s Fidelio suddenly looks like a mouthwatering prospect.`
